Message from the President

To all descendants of Sanford and Nancy Porter I extend a warm invitation to join with us this August 9th and 10th in Porterville, Utah for the annual Porter Family reunion (see map below for directions).  This will be a great opportunity to come and renew family ties, share information, and enjoy some time together.
After some initial set backs, we have made tremendous progress on our Porter Family web site. Our incoming president Steve Wright will be sharing with us the progress that has been made in this area during the business meeting of our reunion (see his comments below). Our goal remains to expand this site into a lively area on the internet where family members can come to chat, conduct research, share histories, photographs, and find links to assist in the work on your family genealogy.  I know Steve has been working hard to provide links to gedcom and paf files that are specific to the Stanford and Nancy Porter lines. Having this information in a central location on the web I believe, will help us to eliminate redundancies and errors in the genealogical records. If you happen to have materials (photos, journals, etc.) that you would like to have posted on the web site, please bring them to the reunion this year.  If unable to attend the reunion you may contact Steven Wright at swright@ida.net for assistance in posting materials to the web site. I extend appreciation to those of you who have provided materials to be shared with the family organization. In the future we will be placing additional personal histories on the web site.

My time as president has provided a wonderful opportunity for me to become better acquainted with many extended family members.  It is has been exciting to be apart of such a vibrant and exciting family group that has an incredible heritage. I again extend a personal invitation to each of you to become involved in the Porter Family Organization. It is a rewarding experience and your efforts will help us grow as an organization.  One way we can all contribute is by continuing to gather and share addresses (both postal and e-mail) to submit to the Porter Family Organization of all family members.  This will allow us to keep in contact with one another and to continue to share the fruits of our labors.  We have need of volunteers willing to serve and lead the work on our various committees.  If you are willing to serve, please let us know. Again I invite all to join with us for an enjoyable weekend together this August and may God continue to bless you and your family in all that you do in this great work.

Best regards,

Message from the Incoming President

I am pleased and grateful for the opportunity to   serve for the next couple of years and hope to continue those things that Chris Porter and prior presidents have been working on. With that in mind, I also have some specific ideas for direction that I hope you will allow us to take the "next step."

It seems obvious to me that for all of the work that is done, little benefit is realized if we cannot be made aware of each others activities and progress. It also seems obvious to me that the Internet is at least one critical way to communicate this information to each other.

Last year we talked about developing our web site to meet some of these goals. Unfortunately, shortly thereafter our system "crashed," causing us to lose critical information (including the list of Porter Family organization members who had previously registered.). We also lost wonderful information that had been provided at last year’s reunion. Quite frankly, the loss was almost the death knell for our web site.

However, we have renewed our efforts, even though that means starting from scratch. I believe the long terms benefits are simply too valuable to quit.

As a result, at our reunion, we will be unveiling a new web site. At that time, I also plan on making some suggestions that, with your approval and assistance, I believe will help us move forward in a dramatic fashion.

We appreciate your patience and apologize for how slowly the Web site has moved forward. However, I believe we have weathered the storm and, with your continued help, we will be able to make great strides in carrying forward the mission statement of the Porter Family Organization. Thank you.

Steve Wright

Monument & Cemetery Committee

Committee Chair: Dorene Jones

Over the past few years the cemetery committee has made tremendous progress in identifying and placing markers on the gravesites of several family descendants. There is still need for additional assistance in compiling information on burial sites with the hope of placing still more markers in the near future. In addition to the Porterville Cemetery we have begun preliminary plans to place a new moment on the gravesite of Amy Sumner Porter (mother of Alma Porter).  Amy Sumner Porter passed away in 1846 shortly following the birth of twins in Winter Quarters, Nebraska and is buried in the pioneer cemetery located near the new LDS temple at this site. We appreciate those who have already contributed and invite all who would like to participate in sharing the costs of these monuments to send donations to:

New Committee Chair: Steve Wright

We can use your help and ideas to continue to make our yearly reunion something to look forward to and remember. If you would like to help, please sign up at the reunion or e-mail me personally. As usual, we will have prizes and awards given at the reunion.

Communications Committee

Committee chair: John Porter

Work continues on developing an exciting new web site. As Steve mentioned, we unfortunately lost most of the data from our previous web site and we are in the process of recreating a new and even better site. One of the more significant components lost was the database containing registration information from many of you. We encourage you and all family members to register (again) on the new site once it is online (should be ready by the time of the reunion).

Also, would you please check with your immediate family members to see if they received this newsletter? If not, please make a copy for them or encourage them to visit our website.

Family History & Genealogical Committee

Committee chair: George Mortimer

Any one interested in helping him, especially typists, please let George know He can be reach at syap3@earthlink.net
