Hyrum D. Buys
Hyrum D. Buys was born in Waterford, Saratoga Co., New York, on Oct.. 22, 1802 to Jacob and Sarah Howard. He married Elizabeth Huntington on March 7, 1832.
He was a Methodist minister living in Amsterdam, New York when he left his church as well as a way of making a living to join the Latter-day Saints and come west. He was baptized July 4, 1836.
They gathered with the saints in Hancock Co., Illinois, in May of 1840. They were driven out with the saints in 1846 and tarried in Mount Pisgah to get an outfit in which to cross the plains. They joined the David Evans Company and started west.
The family had one wagon in which to bring all their possessions and supplies. The children walked ahead. At night they would gather wood for the fire, cook the meals and wash the clothes. After their work was done they danced and sang songs by the camp fire.
The boys acted as scouts, herded cattle and hunted for game. They arrived and settled in Bountiful on September 15, 1850.
He was ordained a High Priest in 1854 and died in 1855. He is buried in Bountiful.
