President's Message
August 9, 2008 is fast approaching. The Annual Sanford Porter Family Reunion will be here before we know it! We will be meeting at the Porterville Ward house in Porterville, Utah.
This year we are planning an exciting reunion, and it will start out at 10:00 a.m. with a 5k walk/run. We want to invite everyone to participate. Byron Porter will be organizing it again this year and he has the route from the Porterville Chapel up to the Porterville Cemetery and back. You can walk and enjoy the views, or give it your best time running and win a tee shirt for a prize. I know this year I will be giving it my best, and I want all of you to enjoy this activity if you are capable.
At 12:00 noon we will meet in the cultural hall for lunch. Our plan this year is for each family to bring a picnic lunch and a potluck salad or dessert to share with all. The reunion committee will provide ice water to drink. We will have tables and chairs set up in the cultural hall for a nice area to eat in. Around 1:30 we will start our Reunion Program.
Last year we had a great program about getting our own Family History program going. I hope we have taken this to heart and have begun to record our family's history and preserve it for our children. It is easy to put it off. As I was reading our family history, I came across a story that brought this point home to me. It is the story of Sanford Porter, Jr... Sanford, Jr. was the eighth child of Sanford and Nancy Porter. His history is very remarkable, and it starts out by stating that it was compiled by two Porter relatives, "as Sanford Porter, Jr., has left us no written record of himself and it is now impossible because of his extreme age and feebleness to obtain detailed information from him…"
We do not want this to be written of us. If we are too busy, have to work on other projects, or have no time for family history, our ancestors will have an idea we may have existed at one time, but will have only hearsay about our testimonies and the reality of our lives. As I read the Sanford Porter Junior story it is one worthy of our time and interest. This year our program will highlight one of the early episodes of his life. When he was 23 years old Sanford Jr. was called to volunteer to march with the Mormon Battalion. Our program will feature a guest speaker telling the story of the epic march the Mormon Battalion made in 1846. I feel this will be a very interesting program and hope you and your family will make the effort to join with us in recognizing the great heritage our Porter Family has. We are hoping you will make plans to attend this year's reunion and renew acquaintances with all your Porter relatives.
I look forward to meeting everyone at the Porterville chapel on August 9, 2008. See you there!
Gary Porter, gary@sanfordporter.org.

Communications
We have an active Website full of information of interest for the members of the Porter Family. Since we began the website many of you have contributed stories and information of interest to all of us. We hope you have been happy with the way we have treated your contributions and hope you realize how many of us have enjoyed your input.
We would like you to know that it is a great source of Porter Family history and information. You can take a virtual tour of the Porterville cemetery to look at different ancestors' monuments. You can access an archive of past Porter Family Newsletters or play games that have a Porter Family connection. You can read some favorite inspirational thoughts, poems and stories. You can access links to many other websites that have information of interest to the Porter Family.
The best thing of all about the Website is everyone can contribute. Just as the contributions of past years have made the site better, we know that there are many more stories out there that we all need to hear. If you have personal histories of any of your Porter relatives, we would love to put them on the site. If you would like to add some favorite poems or Porter anecdotes or stories, it's easy to do. If you know of other sites that would be of interest to the family, we can easily add those if you give us the information. The more contributions we get from you, the richer this site will become.
We encourage you to go today to http://www.sanfordporter.org and see what's available. If you register, you will also be linked to sections of the site that are reserved for family members only. Take some time to explore the site and then think about what you would like to add to make it even better.

History Committee
I'm having a wonderful experience with my mother, recording her personal history! We talk and type, reread and refine as we share stories of life, love, courage and hope - line upon line. My mother is a quilt maker, and is feverishly working to create quilts for each of her living posterity. Each experience we record is a block in her life's quilt, one that will be shared by all. My love and respect for her has deepened, my desire to be more like her has grown. There are stories that live forever: Ammon at the waters of Sebus, three young men carrying weary pioneers across the icy Sweetwater and earning their exaltation, the selling of an engagement ring to pay tithing, and the subsequent healing of eyes…They live on because someone took the time to record them. Be wise and bind your families together by sharing your life stories. When appropriate, share them with the rest of us through the Sanford Porter website.
