Porter's Remembered at the Upper District Mill Creek Park
At the mouth of Mill Creek Canyon in Salt Lake City, stands a small park commemorating the early pioneers who built mills in the Upper Mill Creek area. Chauncey Warriner Porter was one of those men. His name is on the plaque commemorating those early pioneers and also on a large stone nestled near a replica of an early mill. The memorial plaque in this little park reads in part:
"In the spring of 1848, a few families settled on Upper Mill Creek. Even though the soil was rocky, the creek flowing from the Wasatch mountains gave great promise for the future. The water would be diverted over the land for farming; it would provide power for mills, and above all, furnish clear clean water for their homes.
All [the mills] were built by hand with faith and determination to make the land 'blossom as a rose.'
This park commemorates the courage, commitment and creativity of those early pioneers who chose to settle in the beautiful pristine wilderness surrounding Upper Mill Creek."
It was with a great deal of pleasure and pride in our heritage that we visited this little park a couple of weeks ago. We are proud to be part of the Porter family, and it was gratifying to see this tribute to Chauncy.
If you would like to visit, this little park can be found at the North West corner of 3760 South and Wasatch Boulevard. You access the park from Wasatch Boulevard.
